Sandy & John Wedding in San Jose, California

Our dear friends Sandy and John were married on Saturday, August 23, 2008.

They had their ceremony at Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph in San Jose and their reception at The Decathlon Club in Santa Clara.

The Decathlon Club is where Sandy went for her junior prom...what really tops the story is that some of her friends who went to prom with her were there for the reception.

We were fortunate to be part of their lives, to watch their love grow from friends, to husband and wife; a great team...undeniably two glowing peas in a pod.

In the meantime, check out the incredible work of Sandy and John's wedding photographer, Jerry Yoon (and Ingrid). Their engagement shots in Napa Valley came out gorgeous...I mean, h-o-t. I can't wait to see Jerry and Ingrid's dreamy captures from the wedding day...in 3-4 more weeks.

Elisa & Darwin Wedding in Oakland, California

A beautiful wedding day it was!

The ceremony was held at one of Oakland's historic architectural churches - St. James Episcopal Church. The stained glass windows were breathtaking. Judging the church from the exterior you can easily miss the beauty of stained glass windows. The exterior windows had a tinge of cloudiness which appeared to be covered with an opaque plexi. Once you're inside of the church you begin appreciating the historic architecture in the wood floors, pews, and how the stained glass lets in light.

Elisa and Darwin, a super cool and down to earth couple, celebrated their unity at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Oakland for their reception with family and friends. A very fun crowd of guests who knows how to get down and boogie on the dance floor.

One of the sweetest wedding ceremonies that I have been to; you can just see how happy everyone was for Elisa and Darwin on their special day, so many family and friends contributing to the logistics of the day to help with ensuring the day would run smoothly, and all at the same time, remembering to have fun!

My first gig for a wedding event for a very sweet couple, indeed...All the best, Elisa & Darwin!

Thanks for visiting our online journal for Sheltieloves Designs. We're a freelance floral artistry service located in Pleasanton, California in our home studio. Inspired by my design partner, Macy, who loves flowers and would jump at every opportunity she could to stop and smell the daisies during our walks together. That is how the name came about...Sheltie Loves Designs (and flowers).

Our designs carry an aura of contemporary, whimsical, simple and elegant, lush and romantic expressions.

We try to create different designs each time we make a new arrangement which are inspired by the location, the occasion, the flowers in season, and the world around us to create a special piece for you.

Here we will begin sharing images from recent weddings and events, sharing stories of our adventures, and update you with some DIY - "Do It Yourself" instructions to inspire you towards making your very own arrangements. San Francisco Orchid Society Hosts
56th Annual Pacific Orchid Exposition

Prepare yourself for orchids that were born to be wild when you step into the 56th annual Pacific Orchid Exposition (POE), hosted by the thriving San Francisco Orchid Society, one of the oldest and most active orchid societies on the West Coast.

Over 150,000 orchids from all over the globe, in every color, shape and size, will be viewable at this award winning show. The POE will bring out the wild side of all who attend, ensuring a mind boggling, jaw dropping, and eye popping experience.

This provocative showcase of orchids will take place at Fort Mason Center’s Festival Pavilion February 28 through March 2, 2008.

Orchids are the largest family of flowering plants, and grow in every part of the world. The intricately structured orchid is known for its long-life span, revealing its compelling beauty or bizarre nature for months on end. More then 50 growers will be displaying their unique breeds and rare hybrid forms, giving orchid lovers the chance to purchase a one-of-a-kind treasure to gaze at in the comfort of the home, office, restaurant or shop.

The 2008 San Francisco Orchid Society’s Pacific Orchid Expo will offer tours and educational demonstrations of the latest developments in orchid horticulture.

Blue Flower Types

There is difficulty finding true blues in flowers, most plants labeled 'blue' are really not a blue, but in fact more violet or violet-blue. Below are a few of the blue flowers I have found, for purple to violet-blue flowers, check out my 'purple flowers' post.

Trial - Fresh tulip forest centerpiece

Using a short round bowl and a 2 inch pin frog, I wanted to create a foresty and whimsical arrangement perfect for a short centerpiece. Pink tulips were perfect for this!

Trial - Calla lily pond centerpiece

Using a short round bowl, I placed two calla lilies inside along with curly willow branches around the base. Filled up the bowl just over the calla lilies with water and placed 3 floating candles inside. I loved how this turned out. It reminds me of a pond.

With left over snap peas, I was inspired to create a simple centerpiece. Using a short round bowl and a pillar candle, I placed snap peas around the base of the bowl.

Trials - purple wedding bouquet for my friend Sandy

Went to the Oakland flowermart to do a trial run for a purple wedding bouquet. Started off with some lavender roses and snap peas. The bouquet is a hand tied bouquet wrapped with a satin ribbon. I was pretty excited as this was my first wedding bouquet attempt using fresh flowers.

It was fairly easy to make and took approximately 45 minutes for my first time. I would say that the area that took the most time was wiring the snap pea stems to give each one enough strength to hold in the bouquet.

If using all roses only, I would estimate that it would take 20 minutes tops to create a hand tied bouquet on your first try following these instructions. Using a hardy flower like roses, will save you the time of having to wire each stem as roses naturally have a strong stem.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
30 to 60 stems of a hardy flower like the rose (20 to 40 for each bridesmaid bouquet)
Bucket Paper towels Ribbon (in a complementary color),
1 to 2 inches wide Rubber bands or green waxed floral tape
Stem cutter or very sharp knife
Stem stripper
Straight pins or pearl-tipped corsage pins

Preparing the Flowers:

Use your hands or a stem stripper to remove excess foliage and thorns, and pull off damaged or unattractive outer petals. Fill a sink or bucket with water, and holding the stems underwater use the stem cutter or knife to cut the stems at an angle about 2 inches from the bottom. Allow the flowers to drink for a few seconds with the stem ends underwater, then place the stems in a bucket filled halfway with cool water until you are ready to use them. Note: If you're working with roses and the heads aren't open yet, you can force the blooms open by placing the stems in a bucket of hot water; but only do this for a couple of minutes just before you are going to use the roses, or you might kill them otherwise. Keep the stems long while you work with them and trim them to a shorter length when you've finished constructing the bouquet.

I started off with taping the rose stems in bundles of threes.

Assembling the Flowers:

Take one stem at a time with one hand, and use your other hand to hold the flowers in place. Assemble four flowers at an even height in a square shape -- these will be at the center of the dome. Arrange the other flowers one by one around the center flowers to create a dome shape. Note: To better see what the bouquet will look like in your hand, stand in front of a mirror as you construct the bouquet to observe how the shape is progressing.

Then in the other bundles, I added some snap peas into the bundles.

Then taping each of the bundles together to get a round shape.

Securing the Bouquet:

Use a rubber band or floral tape to bind the stems at the spot where they naturally join (about 3 to 4 inches below the flower heads). Repeat the binding toward the end of the stems, leaving about 2 inches of excess stem beneath the bind to trim later. Either place the stems in water and wrap them later or continue to next step.

After getting the bouquet to the round shape I wanted, I added the final touches of a double faced satin ribbon. Starting from the mid section of the bouquet, I wrapped the ribbon around by looping the ribbon over one another and criss crossing the ties alternating on the front and back of the bouquet.

Finish the Handle:

Cut the stem ends so they are all the same length, about 7 to 8 inches long. Dry off the stems with a paper towel. Cut a length of ribbon about three times as long as the length of the stems. Tuck the end of the ribbon inside the top bind and start wrapping in a spiral down the length of the stem. When you reach the bottom, wrap in a spiral back up the stem. At the top, tuck the cut end of the ribbon underneath and secure with a couple of pins pushed through the ribbon and into the stems. If you'd like a bow, cut a separate length of ribbon and tie it just beneath the flower heads.

Then tied the extra of the ribbon into a bow. Added some pearl pins to the bouquet handle for detail.

Results:

Preserving the Bouquet:

Wrap the bouquet in tissue. Store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to leave for the ceremony. For ultimate freshness, it's best to make the bouquet the morning of the wedding. Once the bouquet is constructed, keep the bare stems in water as long as you can and mist the heads well. Then when you're ready, wrap the stems.

When planning out arrangements for color themed parties or weddings, it's helpful to know which flowers would be in season for the month of the event. So I've began compiling a list and pictures for each color.

Event - Berkeley Yacht Club

This event was a blast to work with. Every table exhibited a different centerpiece. The theme was to carry a whimsical, simple and elegant feel with Fall season colors, for an event transitioning from sunset into the beautiful warm evening right on the waters of the bay.

To set the mood, guests were welcomed at the sign in table with a tall display of cymbidium orchids submerged in a cylinder vase. The displayed is warmed with candlelight and sweetened with cranberries for that Fall touch.
